השם אלכסנדרה הוא הגרסא הנשית לשם אלכסנדר, המהווה צורה לטינית לשם היווני אלכסנדרוס (Αλέξανδρος). מבחינה אטימולוגית, השם מורכב משם הפועל היווני "אלכסיין" (ἀλέξειν), שמשמעו "להגן", ומשם העצם אנדרוס (ἀνδρός), שמשמעו "של אדם". כך יכול השם להיות מתורגם כ"מגן האדם".
