Aristocracy
The term aristocracy refers to a form of government where power is held by a small number of individuals from a social elite or from noble families. The transmission of power is often hereditary. In common usage, the term is often a synonym for the nobility, mainly hereditary, of Europe and other parts of the world, regardless of how much political power they have.

אריסטוקרטיה
אריסטוקרטיה (מיוונית, 'שלטונם של הטובים ביותר'), אחת משלוש צורות השלטון החיוביות על פי אריסטו (מלוכנות, אריסטוקרטיה, דמוקרטיה). בימי אריסטו המונח שימש להגדרת שלטון המעטים בעלי "המידות הטובות", השולטים למען הכלל.
בקוטב השלילי של האריסטוקרטיה על פי אריסטו מצויה האוליגרכיה. מובנו של המושג כיום שונה ומשתמשים בו לציין שלטון העובר בירושה, שלטון של שכבת אצולה מסורתית הממלאת את מרבית התפקידים הפוליטיים והצבאיים בחברה, כאשר ההצטרפות לשכבה זו חסומה כמעט לחלוטין. אנשי שלטון כאלה נקראים אריסטוקרטים.
