Aphasia
Aphasia (or aphemia) is a loss of the ability to produce and/or comprehend language, due to injury to brain areas specialized for these functions. It is not a result of deficits in sensory, intellect, or psychiatric functioning. (Brookshire, 1992; Goodglass 1993) It is also not muscle weakness or a cognitive disorder.

אפאזיה
אפאזיה (Aphasia) היא מחלה נוירולוגית הגורמת לאובדן או פגיעה של יכולת השימוש בשפה, כגון דיבור וכתיבה. אפאזיה נגרמת מנזק מוחי בדרך כלל במרכזי השפה (כגון אזור ברוקה), שנמצאים, אצל רוב האנשים, בהמיספרה השמאלית של המוח. הנזק לאזורים אלו יכולה להתרחש כתוצאה משבץ מוחי, פגיעת מוח טראומטית, או פגיעות ראש שונות. אפאזיה עשויה גם להתפתח לאט, במקרים של גידול במוח. הביטוי של המחלה תלוי באזור במוח שנפגע ובמידת החומרה של הפגיעה – במקרים שונים, ייתכן שחולה אפאזיה יוכל לדבר אך לא לכתוב, או להפך, להבין משפטים מורכבים יותר מאלו שיהיה מסוגל ליצור בעצמו, וכן הלאה.
