Apartment
An apartment is a self-contained housing unit that occupies only part of a building. Apartments may be owned (by an owner-occupier) or rented (by tenants). The term "apartment" is favored in North America, whereas the term " flat" is sometimes, but not exclusively used in the United Kingdom and most other English-speaking areas and Commonwealth nations ( Canada being a notable exception); in those countries, "apartment" is often used to describe more upmarket flats.

דירה
דירה היא יחידת מגורים, ובדרך כלל נקראת גם דירת מגורים. היא מקום בו מתנהל תא משפחתי או כל מסגרת אחרת בה אנשים מנהלים את חייהם הבסיסיים לבד או ביחד: באכילה, בשינה, ובילוי שעות פנאי. הדירה משמשת לאירוח חברתי, לעבודה, ולכל פעילות אחרת התואמת את אופי החיים בה. המראה החיצוני והפנימי שלה תלוי במיקומה הגאוגרפי, בסביבה החברתית, ובתרבות המקומית בה היא קיימת. הדירה מהווה מרכיב בסיסי באיכות החיים האנושית, ובימינו מחולקת, על פי רוב, ליחידות פנימיות המשרתות את הצרכים הבסיסיים בימינו: חדרי מגורים, סלון לאירוח, מטבח ופינות אוכל, חדרי רחצה. מלבד אלה קיימות חלוקות נוספות ויחידות אחרות הקשורות בגודל הדירה ובאופי של המתגוררים בה. כמו למשל: חדר כושר, חדר כביסה, חדר ארונות, ועוד.הדירה כמקום מגורים, הסידור הפנימי שלה, ותכולתה - יכולים להעיד על אופיים האנשים המתגוררים בה, ובכלל זה: על השתייכותם המעמדית, סגנון חייהם, ותכונות שונות הקשורות לאופי ולדרך חיים.
