Year
A year (from Old English gēr) is the time between two recurrences of an event related to the orbit of the Earth around the Sun. By extension, this can be applied to any planet: for example, a "Martian year" is the time in which Mars completes its own orbit.

שנה במשמעותה האסטרונומית היא זמן ההקפה של כוכב לכת סביב השמש. את משך ההקפה ניתן להגדיר ביחס לתנועת השמש בשמי כוכב הלכת, לפי הנקודה הקרובה ביותר אל השמש ועוד. לוח השנה הלועזי הנערך לפי השמש מחושב לפי פרק הזמן שבו כדור הארץ משלים הקפה סביב השמש ביחס לכוכבים מרוחקים מאוד (לצורך העניין במרחק אינסופי) שנה זו קרויה שנה סידרלית או שנת שמש. במקרה הפרטי של כדור הארץ, ניתן למדוד שנה גם על פי תנועת הירח, שנה זו קרויה שנת ירח, והיא מוגדרת כ-12 חודשים, כאשר כל חודש הוא משך הזמן שלוקח לירח להקיף פעם אחת את כדור הארץ. שנת ירח קצרה ב-11 יום לערך משנת שמש ועליה מבוססים הלוח העברי והלוח המוסלמי. לכל כוכב לכת שנת שמש משלו. כך, למשל, "שנת כדור הארץ" (הזמן שלוקח ל כדור הארץ להשלים סיבוב אחד סביב השמש) שונה מ"שנת מאדים".
