Alps
The Alps (; ; ; ) is the name for one of the great mountain range systems of Europe, stretching from Austria and Slovenia in the east, through Italy, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and Germany to France in the west. The word "Alps" was taken via French from Latin Alpes (meaning "the Alps"), which may be influenced by the Latin words albus (white) or altus (high) or more likely a Latin rendering of a Celtic or Ligurian original.

הרי האלפים
הרי האלפים (גרמנית Alpen; איטלקית Alpi; צרפתית Alpes; סלובנית alpe) הם רכס הרים במרכז אירופה, המתחיל באוסטריה, עובר דרך המדינות סלובניה, איטליה, שווייץ, ליכטנשטיין וגרמניה ומסתיים בצרפת. האלפים מהווים מחסום גאוגרפי-אקלימי ברור המפריד בין אזור האקלים הים-תיכוני מדרום לאלפים והאזור הממוזג שמצפון להם, מכיוון שהם חוסמים את הרוחות הצפוניות הקרות. ההרים מהווים חלק משרשרת של רכסי הרים הנמשכת מצפון אפריקה ועד דרום-מזרח אסיה. הפסגה הגבוהה ביותר באלפים היא ה מון בלאן המתנשא לגובה של 4,808 מטר מעל פני הים. הפסגות הגבוהות של האלפים מכוסות בשלג תמידי, ובעמקים ביניהן נוצרים קרחוני ענק המעצבים את הנוף. מוצאם של רבים מהנהרות הגדולים של מרכז אירופה הוא באלפים, ביניהם הריין, הדנובה, הפו והרון. בזכות מיקומם במרכז אירופה, הרי האלפים מהווים מוקד משיכה לחובבי סקי רבים והוקמו בהם אתרי סקי רבים.
